As most of you have heard by now, England is in the process of legalising “gay marriage” lead by the Prime Minister David Cameron. In a recent interview, Archbishop Nichols, top Catholic prelate in England gave his strongest criticisms of David Cameron's plans. He asked Catholics go join in the battle against the imposition of gay marriage.
“There was no announcement in any party manifesto, no Green Paper, no statement in the Queen’s Speech. And yet here we are on the verge of primary legislation…From a democratic point-of-view, it’s a shambles. George Orwell would be proud of that manoeuvre, I think the process is shambolic.” He claimed that during a “period of listening”, those who responded were “7-1 against same-sex marriage”.
The BFTC continues….but at this point we are talking about BFTC of England! Catholics are weak in England because there is very little unity even within the church. However, as in the United States, if the bishops of the country unite on an issue, it will certainly spur an increase in morale for many who would otherwise prefer to blend into the woodwork.
England, even more than France, has been an epicenter for the spread of organized secular humanism in the 20th and 21st centuries. Everything mainstream, from the British Humanist Association to Richard Dawkins, advocates an organized and moral world without God. The most visited post I've ever made has been a testimony to that.
For a list of recent examples of the turning tide in the battle, revisit this post. No, really, just take a look again: Scotland now has more secular humanist weddings (this is different than a civil union) than Catholic ones. Archbishop Nichols, ironically, had just approved the Soho masses, which were specifically catering to homosexuals…and had every indication that they would go south (heterodox) and away from the teaching of the Church on the issue. Perhaps to at least “give it a try” he allowed it.
Just recently the Archbishop stopped the Masses and replaced the parish with a parish for the Anglican Ordinariate.
UPDATE 18:54 CST 09 JAN 2013: Various groups claiming Soho Masses are not shut down, only moved to “Farm street” at another Jesuit church. http://protectthepope.com/?p=6366
Desperate times call for desperate measures…like the Archbishop making sure his own camp is onboard before he takes on the government. His camp is still not onboard, so there is a long way to go.
